The Maxi Dress M7745 from McCalls

I was looking for a flirty maxi dress that I could sew and came across this pattern by McCalls Pattern Company, the M7745. It reminded me of the feminine dresses that designer James Galanos designed in the 1960’s and 1970’s and knew it I needed to make it.

I decided to use this stunning chiffon fabric from Minerva to make the dress. It just screamed romantic summer vibes for this maxi dress.
I chose to mash up views D and C and cut off the sleeves. I wanted it to be full length, but with the ruffles of C going all the way down.

Before cutting out the pattern, I made a muslin and then modified the pattern to fit me. With this pattern, I did have to take it in quite a bit. I then drafted the additional ruffle pieces to add to the maxi dress pattern.

In hindsight I would have shortened the skirt the length of the ruffle, as it drags on the floor like a train. It looks fabulous, but is not quite as practical as I would like and worry about people stepping on it in crowds or it getting a bit weathered and dirty.

I will certainly make this dress again as it is very cute and oh so comfy for a beachy dress.

This fabric is so lovely and breathable it is perfect to keep the sun off my skin. All I need now is cute wide brimmed hat and I will be set for my vacation!

Since it is a wrap dress, I just love how the slit opens in the breeze but still keeps me modest and I feel like this would work perfectly for a family picnic.
