Uh oh, are you feeling left out because you don’t know what #MeMadeMay is? Well, let me give you a quick rundown. #MeMadeMay is an annual challenge where sewists (yes, that’s short for sewing enthusiasts) attempt to wear only handmade garments for the month of May.

This year, I’ve decided to take on the challenge and see if I can last the entire month without reaching for anything store-bought. Wish me luck!

What is Me Made May and why I’m doing it

Me made May is a yearly celebration of all things handmade, and I’m doing it this year because I want to make sewing fashionable! Me Made May was founded over a decade ago (2010) to make handmade garments more accepted in society and encourage self-expression through creativity.

In 2010, Zoe Edwards created Me Made May as a challenge to herself to see how long she could last wearing only clothing that was made by her own hands. Initially, she posted the idea on her blog to invite others to join in with the challenge and received a tremendous response from people throughout the world who wanted to take part. She drew inspiration for this project from her own love of creating handmade items and aimed to encourage others to be more creative and self-sufficient. Me Made May quickly gained popularity, becoming an annual event that has been celebrated online every year since its inception – having its own hashtag #MeMadeMay. Each participant commits to wearing at least one item of clothing they’ve made themselves each day for the entire month of May, which helps remind them about their talent for crafting bespoke garments. The event is now a major showcase of creativity and has developed into an international community of enthusiastic makers.

Me Made May is a sewing challenge every May which encourages people who make their own clothes to establish a better understanding of their Me Made Wardrobe.

This year, my goal is to wear one of the things I’ve made myself every day throughout the month, so that I can prove handmade fashion isn’t just for grannies anymore! If Me Made May has taught me anything, it’s that with a bit of patience and a whole lot of inspiration you can take an old piece of fabric and turn it into something you can be proud to show off.

Basically, you are challenging yourself to wear something you made (most people try to do this everyday, for some it is weekly, others it is just to ACTUALLY wear a Me Made garment) so that you can better appreciate the items you handcraft and look for gaps in your wardrobe or areas of focus, such as all those gorgeous gowns you keep sewing but never actually wear out.

The challenge was started by Zoe Edwards of ‘So, Zo

What I’m hoping to accomplish by only wearing handmade clothes for a month

By wearing handmade clothes for a month, I’m hoping to gain a genuine appreciation for the garments I craft and the craftsmanship that goes into each item. What better way to learn the power of wearing handmade than by experiencing it myself? Sure, there may be some bumps in the road as I adjust to wearing a fully DIY wardrobe but I’m confident that I’ll come out the other side with a newfound respect for small-scale fashion makers. Here’s to wearing handmade clothing and learning what it has to teach me!

What Me Made May is Not

Me Made May is not a making challenge, a sewing challenge or a photo challenge on Instagram. It is not about having to make or wear a certain number of handmade items; instead, any number of handmade items can be used for the challenge.

It is also not about creating specific looks or buying fabric to create these new clothes every week – it’s just about wearing existing handmade items that you have made and using them in creative ways.

The challenge is really about refraining from buying new clothing and instead appreciating the items that you have already made. Furthermore, Me Made May isn’t a competition but rather an opportunity to reflect on your personal growth as an individual and as a maker. Instead of comparing yourself to others, the goal should be to focus on your own progress and celebrate how far you have come since you started making your own clothes.

How I’m preparing for Me Made May, including sewing new clothes, and mending old ones

I’m all ready for Me Made May! I’m kicking it off with good intentions – updating my all-time favorites, mending some casualties from past adventures, and of course, making new handmade treasures to add to the wardrobe. Keep an eye out because no wardrobe is complete without me made gems sprinkled throughout. It’s a month of flaunting my flair for style with a touch of confidence. I also want to see where those gaps in my handmade wardrobe are. Who knows? Maybe me made may will become an annual tradition…for me and you!

My daily outfits during Me Made May, with photos

Me Made May has been a lot of fun for me! I’ve put together some creative and stylish combos, both for work, like pairing a flowy blouse with my favorite Ava Circle Skirt, and for casual days, like throwing on a French terry sweater, comfy tee and stretch suede trousers. Every day has felt like a style challenge (and it is hard to find the time to snap a photo every day!) and I’m proud to say that I did it. Whether it was dressing myself up or adding an extra special something to an existing Me Made May look, I’m proud of my daily outfits during Me Made May! #MeMadeMay

Reflections on the experience at the end of the month

Me Made May has blown me away with its sewing challenge! At the end of the month, I look back on all the handmade creations I’ve completed and feel so proud of my accomplishments. It’s amazing to reflect and appreciate the growth I have experienced with my skills as a creative. With Me Made May wrapping up, I can definitely say that it was an adventure, and that my confidence in my abilities has skyrocketed!

So I did notice a few gaps in my Me Made wardrobe after doing this challenge:

  1. I do not have enough basics (think solid tees, skirts, etc.)
  2. I have absolutely no shorts at all
  3. I need some new Me Made leggings (my Avery leggings have seen better days and I do not think I should be wearing them in public the large hole they now have)

This challenge was a bit of a bother to do everyday (namely for the photo aspect) but I am really pleased with myself for completing it and cannot wait for next year!

And that’s a wrap on Me Made May 2021! I hope you enjoyed following along and seeing all my outfits. If you’re interested in trying a similar challenge, I highly recommend it. It’s a great way to get outside your comfort zone, try new things, and really think about your style and how you want to wear your clothes. Be sure to check out the video for all the looks in action! #MeMadeMay #MeMadeMay2021
