Gather your materials – you will need an assortment of fabrics for the quilt top, batting, backing fabric, and thread
With quilting, there’s all the fun and reward of creating something beautiful with your own two hands! So, let’s get started. Before you begin quilting, you need to make sure that you have gathered all the necessary materials – fabric for quilt top (scraps work wonderfully for this), batting, backing fabric and thread. With these in hand and a quilt pattern of your choice, it won’t be long until you will be learning to sew your very own quilt! So, make sure you don’t miss out on any supplies before getting ready to start quilting – it’ll make the whole process easier and more enjoyable.

Cut your fabrics into squares
If you’re looking for something fun to do, why not try cutting fabric into squares? No matter how many fabrics you have, it’s a great way to utilize your existing supplies, scraps from other quilts and create something beautiful. Plus, there are plenty of free quilt patterns available online if you’re in need of inspiration – like The Tiny Tiles Quilt Pattern. You might also want to consider purchasing new fabrics or taking a class at your local craft store. Cutting fabric into squares is creative and rewarding – so go ahead and give it a try! It is also great for scrap busting.

Sew the squares together in a random four-square block to create the tiny tiles.
Take four tiny fabric squares and sew them together in the four-square quilt pattern and you have a modern version of foursquare block. It’s like tiny building blocks for tapestries, with each four-square block made up of four equally sized pieces stitched into intricate patterns that are both aesthetically pleasing and emotionally calming. By utilizing solid squares of fabric (in this case the white background low volume pieces), it creates a very modern take on this beginner friendly quilt pattern. Not only will you get to enjoy your own handiwork, but you’ll be also guaranteed to use this simple four square tiles pattern in many other ways for many more quilts to come!

Layer the quilt top with the batting and backing fabric
While you learn to quilt, one of the most difficult steps is layering the quilt top with batting and backing fabric. It’s really like playing your favorite game but with different sized pieces. If you’re nervous about it, start by folding the backing fabric in half and then find where the middle is so that you can line up your batting and quilt top. Use curved safety pins generously and don’t skimp on adding extra borders for stretching before taking a deep breath and sewing up that masterpiece! Another great tip, instead of pins, is to use fabric spray adhesive that washes out (like 505 Spray) – just be sure not to have any wrinkles in the fabric.

Quilt the three layers together using a straight stitch and a walking foot.
Quilting is an art form that has been around for centuries and quilting with a walking foot is one way to add quilting and beauty to your quilt project – without having to master free motion quilting, so it is perfect for the beginner quilter and sewist. It’s almost like you’re quilting with a dance partner – the quilt will glide along over your fabric while the quilting foot takes care of all the hard work! It functions by pushing the fabric from both the top and the bottom of your quilt sandwich, so nothing shifts, and your stitches are perfectly even. All you must do is take it slow and steady, straight stitch together the three layers in layers, and soon you’ll be ready to show off your quilt masterpiece. So don’t be afraid – quilting with a walking foot may seem intimidating but it’ll be worth the effort in no time.

Bind the edges of the quilt.
Binding a quilt is the icing on the cake of your sewing project – it seals up all those pretty fabric scraps and ties the quilt edges with an inviting bow. Sure, it can be tedious and time-consuming, but all good things come to those who wait, right? Once you get the hang of how to bind a quilt, it becomes second nature! The key is to start with a matching thread to your binding fabric, using smaller stitches and overlapping the binding on each side. Once you’ve got every edge bounded in sewn perfection, sit back, and admire how professional looking your work appears! You can sew the binding on first by machine then hand stitch the finishing (my preferred method), or you can do it all by machine.
