Garments:  The seam allowance is 5/8″ (1.6cm), unless directly stated in the instructions.

Bras: The seam allowance is 1/4″ (0.64cm), unless directly stated in the instructions.

Quilting:  The seam allowance is 1/4″ (0.64cm), unless directly stated in the instructions.

The seam allowance is already included in the pattern – you do not need to add the seam allowance to the pattern.

Yes, seam allowances are included on our patterns.  There is no need to add anything extra.

Yes, all the sewing patterns use layers.  This way you can hide the size (or sizes, if you are between) you are not making it even easier to cut our the right pattern.  This was also intental for those sewists who have certain disabilities that make it difficult to distinguish between the different dotted lines.  It is important that we help to make our patterns as accessible to everyone as we can.

Our patterns in several formats to make it easier for you.  We have the print at home option (US Letter) which provides the pattern on regular printer paper in a “tiled format” that you can tape together.  The second format is a copyshop file (A0), so you can send the file to a printer and have it printed on large format paper.  Lastly, we offer projector friendly files, so you can go paperless.

We have sizes from 2-20 in Missy and 18-36 in Curvy (plus).  All the bodice patterns have A through H cup bust options for every size.  For a detailed look at the sizes and exact measurements, be sure to check out the size chart.

If you take a look at the size charts, you will notice that the Missy range have a 12″ difference between the waist and hips and the Curvy range has an 8″ difference between the waist and hips.  So, depending on where your proportions fall there is overlap to allow for a more customized fit.

We did not chat about bust size, as we offer cups A through H in ALL sizes (not just a B cup in the Missy a D cup in the Curvy).

The Stitch Société is a community for fellow sewists and Makers can connect and learn through their journey of sewing.  It is FREE to join and there is a lot of free patterns, courses and content.  It is also where the courses for the paid sewing patterns and courses are (i.e. The Ivy Pinafore Skirt & The Lilianna Couture Skirt Making Course).

From your home printer to get the perfect 100% scale – make sure to always print your sewing pattern at 100% scale (or click ‘no scaling’)! To get fully accurate measurements, you must ensure that scaling is set properly and that the measured square on the pattern (1″) matches up with 1″ on your ruler.

There is a detailed video in the Stitch Société that walks you through it.

You have unlimited access to your PDF pattern in your Stitch Société course.

If for any reason it is not showing up for you, please contact katherine@sheerstitchery.com and we will get you access right away.

Top Tip:  If you want to ensure you always have the patterns on hand, it is recommended to download the pattern to your computer either on your hard drive or the loud (i.e. Dropbox or Google Drive)

To get started sewing you will need a few basic supplies. You’ll need a sewing machine, appropriate fabric for the project you want to make, thread to match the fabric (polyester for most garment sewing, as it is stronger and cotton if you are quilting, as it shrinks and scrunches up the fabric when the quilt is washed), scissors (or rotary cutter and mat – our preference), a seam ripper, glass head pins (woven fabrics), clips (knit fabrics and quilt bindings), machine needles (in different types and sizes depending on the type of fabric and project), flexible tailor’s measuring tape (so you can measure you size), an iron,  ironing board or pressing surface, marking tools such as tailor’s chalk or water soluble markers, pens/pencils for tracing pattern markings onto fabric pieces. Depending on your project there may be additional items needed; our patterns and courses provides a full materials list and our blog has helpful tutorials to answer questions about what other supplies might be required for specific projects. Additionally Sheer Stitchery offers classes that provide more in-depth guidance on what to bring when getting started sewing.

No.  The sewing patterns come in a .PDF format so you are not able to edit them.
